Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has assured that the investigation into the murder of Dhaka University student Samya will be transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) for further action. The assurance came during a meeting with a Dhaka University delegation led by Vice Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan at the Secretariat on Sunday afternoon.
Also present were Professor Hosne Ara Begum, Director of the Institute of Educational Research (IER), and several student representatives.
Following the meeting, Professor Hosne Ara stated, “We demanded a fair and speedy trial for Samya’s murder. The Home Advisor gave us his full attention and took notes.”
SS Nahin Islam, a close friend of Samya and delegation member, expressed frustration over the slow progress in the case despite giving Shahbagh police a 48-hour ultimatum. “The Home Advisor has now assured us that the case will be handed over to the DB and tried under a special tribunal,” Nahin said.
While noting that the group isn’t fully satisfied, Nahin added that the assurance offers some hope, but true satisfaction will only come once the accused are brought to justice. No decision has been made yet regarding withdrawal of student protests.
He also emphasized that despite political groups on campus voicing their own agendas, the students’ sole demand remains justice for Samya. He noted that the next steps, including potential escalation of demonstrations, will be decided after discussions with peers.
The delegation expressed cautious optimism, saying that the transfer of the case to the DB could finally mark visible progress in the investigation.
