Hollywood actor Michael Madsen, known for his iconic roles in Quentin Tarantino films, died at his Malibu, California home on Thursday morning at the age of 67. Authorities responded to a 911 call and found him unresponsive, pronouncing him dead at 8:25 am local time. According to his representative, he is believed to have died of cardiac arrest.
Madsen rose to fame through his portrayal of the sadistic Mr Blonde in Reservoir Dogs (1992), shocking audiences with the infamous ear-cutting scene that cemented his reputation for intense, villainous roles. He also starred in Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 2, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His career spanned over four decades, with Madsen playing a range of roles from psychopathic criminals to sheriffs and detectives in both film and television.
Beyond cinema, Madsen lent his distinctive voice to popular video games including Grand Theft Auto III and the Dishonored series, further extending his influence into gaming culture.
Born in Chicago in September 1957, Madsen grew up in a family connected to public service and the arts. His father, a WWII Navy veteran, later worked as a firefighter, while his mother was a filmmaker. His sister, Virginia Madsen, is also an acclaimed actor, known for her Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated role in Sideways.
Madsen was married three times and is survived by four children, including actor Christian Madsen. His personal life faced tragedy in 2024 when he divorced his wife of 28 years, DeAnna, following the death of their son Hudson.
In a tribute to Variety, his sister Virginia described him poignantly: “My brother Michael has left the stage. He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother – etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark.”
Madsen’s death marks the loss of a Hollywood figure known for embodying complex antiheroes and unforgettable cinematic moments that defined an era of crime dramas and neo-noir storytelling.
