The High Court on Tuesday accepted an appeal by Hitu Sheikh challenging the death sentence he received for the rape and murder of Asiya, a case that sparked nationwide outrage. Justices Md Mostafizur Rahman and Md Sagir Hossain admitted the petition and stayed the Tk one lakh fine imposed by the Magura court. Asiya was assaulted on March 5 while visiting her sister’s in-laws in Magura and died on March 13 after treatment in multiple hospitals. Hitu Sheikh, who confessed to the crime, was sentenced to death on May 17, while three other family members were acquitted. His appeal will now be heard by the High Court.
