HC Questions Legality of Faruque Ahmed’s Nomination Cancellation, BCB to Maintain Status Quo

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule questioning the legality of the National Sports Council’s (NSC) decision to cancel Faruque Ahmed’s nomination as a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and appoint former national captain Aminul Islam Bulbul in his place.

The ruling came in response to a writ petition filed by Faruque Ahmed on Sunday. The court, led by Justice Razik Al Jalil and Justice Sathika Hossain, also ordered a ‘status quo’ to be maintained, allowing the current BCB board—led by Aminul Islam—to continue its operations temporarily.

The court asked five respondents, including the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the BCB, to explain why the cancellation of Faruque’s nomination and Aminul’s subsequent appointment should not be deemed illegal or beyond the authority of the responsible bodies.

BCB’s legal counsel Mahin M Rahman confirmed the board’s continuity under its current nine-member panel headed by Aminul. The dispute stems from NSC’s decision on May 29 to revoke Faruque’s nomination, appointing Aminul as his replacement the following day. Soon after, Aminul was elected BCB president by the board.
