HC Defers Verdict on Writ Challenging Ishraque Hossain’s DSCC Mayoral Declaration

The High Court on Wednesday postponed its ruling until Thursday on a writ petition seeking to suspend the Election Commission’s gazette notification that declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The bench comprising Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury set the new date following a hearing on the petition, which was filed by Md Mamunur Rashid, a resident of the DSCC area, on May 13.

The petition challenges both the March 27 verdict by Judge Md Nurul Islam of the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal—who overturned the 2020 DSCC election results and declared Ishraque mayor—and the subsequent April 27 gazette notification issued by the Election Commission.

It also calls for action against the judge for allegedly issuing a fraudulent judgment and asks the court to prevent Ishraque from taking oath.

Following the tribunal’s ruling, two Dhaka residents, including Mamunur Rashid, sent legal notices to relevant authorities on April 28, urging them to review or appeal the verdict and halt Ishraque’s official appointment.

Meanwhile, Ishraque Hossain’s supporters continued their sit-in protest for the seventh day on Wednesday, demanding his immediate swearing-in as DSCC mayor.
