England marked a dominant return to form in one-day internationals as they crushed the West Indies by 238 runs in the first ODI at Edgbaston, handing new white-ball captain Harry Brook a winning start. The victory ended England’s seven-match ODI losing streak and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
England posted a formidable 400-8, the highest team total in men’s ODI history without a century, powered by fifties from Jacob Bethell (82), Ben Duckett (60), Brook (58), and Joe Root (57). The West Indies’ chase faltered early, collapsing to 79-5 before being bowled out for 162 in under 27 overs.
Saqib Mahmood starred with 3-32, including key top-order wickets, while Adil Rashid celebrated his 150th ODI with two dismissals, finishing the match by bowling Alzarri Joseph. England’s performance in the field was highlighted by a spectacular one-handed boundary catch from Brydon Carse to dismiss Windies skipper Shai Hope.
Brook praised his side’s balanced performance and particularly commended Mahmood’s powerplay bowling. This 238-run win is England’s second-biggest ODI victory by runs, while the West Indies suffered one of their heaviest defeats in format history.
