Guardiola Understands Klopp’s Criticism of Club World Cup but Remains Focused on Winning

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged Jurgen Klopp’s criticism of the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup but remains determined to win the tournament in the United States this summer.

Klopp, now Red Bull’s head of global soccer, recently described the Club World Cup as “the worst idea ever implemented in football,” citing concerns over the packed calendar leaving players with insufficient recovery time and increasing injury risks. Guardiola responded by expressing understanding for Klopp’s stance, recalling their joint efforts to push for better scheduling during their Premier League managerial tenures.

“Jurgen — we fought together many, many times,” Guardiola said. “We went to UEFA meetings to discuss improving the calendar for more quality and rest. I understand and respect his argument, and I would defend it as well.”

Despite widespread criticism of the expanded competition, Guardiola expressed pride in City’s participation, suggesting that some complaints stem from clubs not involved. “Many teams complain because they are not here — if they were, they would probably be happy to take part. They would bring their media, their fans, and enjoy the financial benefits too,” he stated.

Manchester City will face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in the round of 16 on Monday in Orlando. England manager Thomas Tuchel recently commented that rivals such as Liverpool and Arsenal could benefit next season from having the summer off, while City continues its demanding schedule.

Guardiola, however, remains focused on the task at hand. “I try to be relaxed and enjoy the good vibes and the competition,” he said. “We’re here, and we want to win it.”
