Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has warned that the government will take immediate action if the banned Awami League attempts to regroup or organize under any capacity. The statement came after the 9th meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Council held at the Secretariat on Monday (May 12).
Addressing reporters, Chowdhury said, “We will act according to the directive in the official notification. It is our duty to enforce the law as it stands.” He mentioned that intelligence reports and public alerts have indicated that the Awami League is attempting to reorganize through day and night processions in different areas. “If we receive prior information or detect activities through intelligence, appropriate action will be taken immediately,” he added.
When asked about the travel and passport issue of former President Md. Abdul Hamid, the advisor explained that a committee has been formed to investigate whether his retention of a passport and travel abroad was legal, given the privileges he continues to receive under the Warrant of Precedence.
On the issue of illegal arms recovery, Chowdhury acknowledged that the government has not yet seized the volume of weapons it anticipated but affirmed that operations are ongoing and will be intensified further.
