Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abdul Kalam Azad Majumder warned on Wednesday that legal action may be taken against media outlets that publish false or misleading news. Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, Azad reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to press freedom but stressed that it does not extend to the dissemination of misinformation.
The statement came in response to recent reports claiming that the freedom fighter status of key figures from the Mujibnagar government—including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Syed Nazrul Islam, and Tajuddin Ahmad—had been revoked. Azad demanded that the newspapers involved, including Samakal, Jugantar, Ittefaq, and Kalerkantho, correct their reports in print.
The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing earlier labeled the reports as “completely false and misleading” in a statement shared on its verified Facebook page. Liberation War Affairs Adviser Farooq E Azam clarified that all members of the Mujibnagar government were considered freedom fighters, and that officials and employees are recognized as associate freedom fighters under the JAMUKA Ordinance.
He also noted that the definitions of freedom fighters and associate freedom fighters have evolved over time but emphasized that their honor, status, and benefits remain unchanged.
