Govt Approves Tk 172 Crore to Replace Burnt Police Vehicles with 200 New Pickups

The government has approved the purchase of 200 new double cabin pickups for the police at a cost of Tk 172 crore, as part of efforts to replace vehicles destroyed during the mass uprising in July 2024. Each vehicle is priced at Tk 8.6 million and will be procured directly from state-owned Pragati Industries.

The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Government Procurement Advisory Council on June 5, chaired by Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed. The move comes in response to widespread destruction during the unrest, which saw 526 police vehicles burned and 533 vandalized—rendering over 1,000 units unusable and causing losses exceeding Tk 360 crore.

Initially, the police had proposed purchasing 722 vehicles, but that number was reduced during review. The first phase includes 200 pickups, with further acquisitions pending. Authorities hope the new fleet will restore police operational capacity and reinforce law and order. The Finance Advisor also hinted at future plans to build a police housing complex near Dhaka.
