Protests at the Bangladesh Secretariat entered their 11th consecutive day on Tuesday, as government officials continued to demand the immediate repeal of the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
Organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, demonstrators gathered in front of Building No. 4 at 11 AM, marched in procession, and staged a sit-in outside the Cabinet Division. Memorandums were submitted to Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed and Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul, urging the government to revoke what they called a “draconian and unjust” law.
Md Nurul Islam, Co-Chairman of the Unity Forum, criticized the absence of a dearness allowance in the proposed budget and warned that protests would intensify if no action is taken by June 15.
The ordinance, issued on May 25 and approved by the Advisory Council earlier that week, allows for the dismissal of public servants through a simple show-cause notice for certain types of misconduct, bypassing established disciplinary procedures. Protesters argue this undermines job security and due process.
The Unity Forum, which represents officers and staff from various ministries and departments, has vowed to escalate the movement with nationwide demonstrations if their demands are not met.
