Google’s digital payment platform, Google Pay, is set to officially launch in Bangladesh within the next month. Initially available to City Bank customers, the service will allow Visa and MasterCard holders to link their cards to Google Wallet and make NFC-enabled tap-and-pay transactions via Android phones.
The rollout, jointly implemented by City Bank and Google, aims to modernize the local digital payment ecosystem by enabling contactless payments at point-of-sale (POS) terminals. Although Google Wallet handles transactions, it does not store user data, eliminating the need for direct approval from Bangladesh Bank, though banks must notify the central bank before integration.
Over time, more banks in Bangladesh are expected to join the service. While Google Wallet typically doesn’t charge users, transaction fees may apply depending on the issuing bank’s policies or if transactions are routed through international servers.
