Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has announced a revamped 26-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League semi-finals in June, recalling goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen and introducing two debutants—midfielder Tom Bischof and striker Nick Woltemade.
The squad sees ten changes from the previous lineup, driven largely by injuries to key players including Jamal Musiala, Antonio Rüdiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Kai Havertz. Calling the injury situation “extremely bitter,” Nagelsmann stressed he would not rush any recovering players back into action.
Ter Stegen, who recently returned to form with Barcelona after a long injury layoff, has been named Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper. “He’s in top shape and our number one,” Nagelsmann confirmed.
Among those returning to the squad are Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) and Niclas Füllkrug (West Ham United), both back after missing the March internationals due to injury. Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry and Aleksandar Pavlovic, as well as Borussia Dortmund duo Waldemar Anton and Felix Nmecha, are also recalled.
Bischof, who is set to join Bayern Munich from Hoffenheim this summer, receives his first senior call-up alongside Stuttgart’s in-form striker Nick Woltemade, whom Nagelsmann praised for his “extraordinary skills and top form.”
Germany will face Portugal in the semi-final clash in Munich, while Spain and France battle in the other semi-final in Stuttgart. Germany secured their place in the final four with a hard-fought quarter-final win over Italy in March.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, including a narrow extra-time loss to eventual Euro 2024 winners Spain, Nagelsmann said, “We’ve made progress, but we can’t afford to give even one metre less than we did against Italy.”
