Garbage Dump Near Pabna School Forces Students to Hold Noses in Class, Residents Demand Urgent Action

The learning environment at Mahendrapur Government Primary School in Pabna has been severely disrupted due to a nearby open garbage dump that emits a strong stench and attracts swarms of mosquitoes. Located near the busy Mahendrapur bus terminal, the dump is affecting not only the students and teachers but also local residents and commuters, including university students.

Teachers report that the unbearable smell is making it difficult to conduct classes. Students can be seen holding their noses during lessons, and some have reportedly fallen ill with stomach-related illnesses and diarrhea, prompting parents to take them home. “The situation worsens during hot days,” said schoolteacher Mokhlesur Rahman Russell, adding that many are considering transferring their children to other schools.

Fifth-grade students Priyanti, Toya, and Rabbi shared that even with windows closed, they struggle to breathe and focus in class. The foul odor has become part of daily life, yet no permanent solution has been provided.

The impact extends beyond the school. Residents of the densely populated area, like Sharif and Mehedi Hasan, say their homes are overrun by flies and foul air, making even eating a meal unbearable. Local business owner Shahin Alam noted that workers avoid his workshop due to the unbearable conditions.

University students from Pabna University of Science and Technology, located 8 kilometers away, also suffer as university buses pass the area 15–16 times a day. Student Ishaq said the stench disrupts daily commutes and causes discomfort for both students and faculty.

In response, Pabna Municipality Assistant Engineer Md. Obaid ul Haque acknowledged the issue, stating the main waste disposal station in Fakirpur is under development. “Until that project is completed, we have no alternative,” he said. He added that bleaching powder is being used regularly to mitigate the odor and tin sheets have been placed as a temporary barrier.

Despite these measures, residents and school authorities are demanding the immediate relocation of the dump to restore a safe and healthy environment for students and the community.
