France Bans Smoking in Public Spaces to Protect Children Starting July 1

France will enforce a nationwide smoking ban in outdoor public spaces frequented by children—including parks, beaches, school grounds, bus stops, and playgrounds—starting July 1, 2025. Health Minister Catherine Vautrin announced the law, emphasizing the need to protect children from tobacco exposure and ensure cleaner air in public areas.

The ban, which does not apply to outdoor restaurant seating (“terraces”), will carry a fine of €135 for violations. While e-cigarettes are not included in the current ban, the government is moving to regulate nicotine content.

This initiative follows voluntary smoke-free efforts by over 1,500 municipalities and aligns with France’s broader anti-smoking policies since 2008. Public health experts praise the move as a vital step in safeguarding future generations from smoking-related harm.
