Four people, including a police officer and two Rohingyas, remain missing after a trawler carrying 39 passengers capsized in the Meghna River near Hatia in Noakhali’s Dwip Upazila on Saturday afternoon. The vessel, en route from Bhasanchar to Ali Bazar Ghat, sank after hitting a submerged char around 3 PM.
According to authorities, the bottom of the trawler burst, leading to its quick submersion. Rescue efforts by local fishermen, fire service, police, naval police, and the Youth Red Crescent managed to save 34 passengers, including two policemen. One body was recovered, and rescue operations are ongoing.
Several survivors, including a police sub-inspector, a constable, a senior nurse, and four Rohingya patients, were admitted to Noakhali General Hospital. Most were treated for chest pain due to drowning, while the nurse required oxygen support for water inhalation.
The trawler was reportedly in good condition and nearing its destination when the incident occurred. Survivors described moments of panic as waves capsized the vessel after it struck the underwater shoal. Efforts to locate the remaining missing individuals continue.
