Supporters of former Narayanganj Bandar Upazila chairman Ataur Rahman Mukul blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on Monday afternoon, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in his recent assault.
The protest took place in the Madanpur area of Bandar upazila, with participation from leaders and activists of a faction of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP, along with members from Bandar Upazila and various unions. The blockade began in the afternoon, halting traffic on both lanes and causing long tailbacks for nearly an hour.
Police intervened and assured the protesters that the culprits would be arrested soon, leading them to lift the blockade by 5 PM. However, Metropolitan BNP leaders issued a stern ultimatum, demanding arrests within 48 hours and threatening to block the highway again if their demands were not met.
Kanchpur Highway Police Station OC Kazi Wahid Morshed confirmed the incident, stating that traffic has since returned to normal. The protest followed an earlier incident where Mukul and his associates, accompanied by some police personnel, visited the Hariharipur 412 MW power plant after securing a tender for repair work and worker recruitment, during which the chairman was reportedly assaulted.
