Foreign Secretary Jasim Uddin Set to Go on Leave; Md. Nazrul Islam to Serve as Acting Secretary

Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin is set to go on leave for several months, pending final approval from the government’s policy-making level, according to sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his absence, Md. Nazrul Islam, currently serving as Secretary (East) at the ministry, will assume the role of Acting Foreign Secretary.

Ministry insiders revealed on Tuesday that Jasim Uddin is also expected to be relieved of his duties as Foreign Secretary. Upon completion of his leave, he may be appointed as Bangladesh’s ambassador to a country in North America.

This marks the second reshuffle of the Foreign Secretary position under the interim government. A senior officer from the 13th BCS Foreign Affairs Cadre, Jasim Uddin was appointed to the role in September 2023. He is scheduled to go on post-retirement leave (PRL) in December 2026.
