Five members of the local Mexican band Grupo Fugitivo were kidnapped and killed by suspected drug traffickers in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, state authorities confirmed. The musicians, aged between 20 and 40, were abducted on May 25 while en route to a concert. Their bodies were later found, marking another act of cartel-related violence in a region notorious for lawlessness.
Tamaulipas Attorney General Irving Barrios Mojica announced that nine members of the Gulf cartel were arrested in connection with the murders. Police seized nine firearms and two vehicles during the operation. While Grupo Fugitivo was known for performing regional Mexican music, including “corridos” that sometimes criticized drug lords, it remains unclear if their songs directly led to the attack.
The state of Tamaulipas continues to suffer from widespread cartel violence, with many areas under de facto control of criminal groups. The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Reynosa and surrounding areas, citing rampant crime, kidnappings, and heavily armed groups. Local authorities remain limited in their ability to combat organized crime in the region.
