Ferry Services Resume on Chandraghona–Raikhali River Route After 5-Day Suspension

After a five-day suspension due to navigability issues, ferry services on the Chandraghona–Raikhali river route resumed at 6 AM on Sunday (May 18), according to Sabuj Chakma, Executive Engineer of the Roads and Townships Division (SWD), Rangamati.

The suspension, which began on Tuesday (May 13), was caused by shallow water levels in the Karnaphuli River, hampering ferry movement. To resolve the issue, engineers and staff from the Roads and Towns Department conducted dredging operations and repaired the ferry connection road, allowing services to restart.

Ronel Chakma, Sub-Divisional Mechanical Engineer of Rangamati Roads and Highways, explained that during the dry season, low tides create sandbars where ferries and barges often get stuck, severely disrupting transportation. The temporary closure was essential to restore navigability.

This vital river route facilitates the daily movement of thousands of passengers and cargo vehicles—ranging from heavy trucks to light and medium transport—between Raikhali Ferry Ghat in Kaptai Upazila (Rangamati) and Chandraghona Ferry Ghat in Rangunia Upazila (Chattogram) via the Karnaphuli River.
