The FBI has arrested Chinese national Yunqing Jian for allegedly smuggling a dangerous biological agent, Fusarium graminearum, into the United States. This fungus, classified as a potential agricultural terrorism threat, was reportedly brought in for research at the University of Michigan.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Jian had ties to the Chinese Communist Party and had received Chinese government funding for similar pathogen studies. Jian’s boyfriend, Junyong Liu, was also charged after admitting to smuggling the fungus through Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Both individuals face multiple charges, including conspiracy, smuggling, false statements, and visa fraud. The incident has raised concerns over biosecurity and foreign influence in U.S. research institutions.
