A Faridpur court has rejected the bail petitions of 21 Awami League leaders and activists and ordered their immediate imprisonment in connection with a case filed under the Explosives Control Act. The order was issued by District and Sessions Judge Zia Haider around 1 PM on Monday (May 12).
The 22 accused had been on a four-week interim bail granted by the High Court, which required them to appear before the lower court upon its expiration. During the hearing, only one accused, Nabab Ali (65), was granted bail due to health reasons. The remaining 21 were taken into custody directly from the court premises under police supervision.
Those denied bail include several high-ranking local leaders such as Sheikh Delwar Hossain, former vice chairman of Alfadanga Upazila Parishad, Iqbal Hossain, vice-president of the Upazila Awami League, and Nur Islam Sheikh, general secretary of the Upazila Sramik League, among others.
The case stems from a January 18 complaint filed by BNP supporter Lavlu Sardar, naming 170 Awami League members and alleging the involvement of an additional 2,500–3,000 unidentified individuals in an incident involving explosives in the Buraich area of Alfadanga Municipality.
