Police in Chattogram arrested Akash Chowdhury, a former Jamaat-e-Islami activist, on Sunday afternoon for physically assaulting a woman and a youth during a May 28 protest organized by the Democratic Student Alliance. The arrest took place in the city’s Kotwali area around 2:45 PM following a tip-off.
Chowdhury, son of former Satkania Municipality councillor Nechar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, was caught on viral video kicking a young man and striking a woman during the protest near Chittagong Independent University. The violent incident occurred during a rally demanding the release of convicted war criminal and Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam.
Following public outrage, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Chowdhury for “violating party discipline.” He has since been produced before a city court in connection with the assault case. Police have previously detained two others over the incident, with one released on bail. The investigation remains ongoing.
