Ex-Biden Official Says Israel Committed War Crimes in Gaza, Reveals Internal Policy Disputes

Matthew Miller, former spokesperson for the U.S. State Department under President Joe Biden, stated in a recent podcast interview that he has “no doubt” Israel committed war crimes in Gaza. Speaking on Sky News’ Trump 100 podcast released on June 2, Miller said that although he does not believe Israel’s actions amount to genocide, specific incidents clearly qualify as war crimes.

Miller, who served from 2023 until the end of Biden’s term, explained that while in office, he was obligated to represent official U.S. government positions—not his personal views. At the time, the administration had not concluded that Israel’s actions met the threshold for war crimes and still has not officially made that determination.

He described war crimes as either a deliberate policy or reckless conduct that facilitates them, and he believes the Israeli military’s actions in certain cases fall under the latter. He further noted that Israeli soldiers committed war crimes during the conflict in Gaza.

Miller also confirmed longstanding speculation about internal disagreements within the Biden administration over U.S. policy toward Israel and Gaza. He acknowledged both “major and minor” divisions among officials from the outset. He subtly referenced tensions between President Biden and then–Secretary of State Antony Blinken over the handling of Israel and Ukraine-related matters.

Miller’s remarks mark a rare public acknowledgment from a former senior U.S. official and add to the ongoing global debate over accountability and foreign policy in the Gaza conflict.
