European Union Ambassador Michael Miller reaffirmed the EU’s neutral stance on the timing of Bangladesh’s next national election, stating it is solely a Bangladeshi decision. Speaking in Rajshahi on Thursday, Miller emphasized that the EU will not press for “early or late” elections, but supports a successful political transition grounded in the rule of law, fundamental rights, and due process.
In light of the opposition BNP’s demand for elections by December and the interim government’s proposal for a timeline between December 2025 and June 2026, Miller clarified that the EU’s role is not to interfere, but to assist in implementing reforms where needed, particularly through collaboration with the National Consensus Commission.
On economic matters, the ambassador praised Rajshahi’s export potential—especially its mangoes—and expressed EU readiness to expand trade relations. He also lauded the cleanliness and planning of Rajshahi city and the hospitality of its people, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to supporting both the political and economic development of Bangladesh.
