World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez could make a dramatic return to Arsenal, the club where he began his professional journey, as speculation swirls around the potential exit of current No. 1, David Raya.
According to British media reports, Arsenal are closely monitoring Martínez’s situation at Aston Villa and may move for the Argentine star if Raya departs. Raya, currently on loan from Brentford, has attracted interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. Should he secure a move to Spain, Arsenal reportedly view Martínez as a prime candidate to fill the gap.
Martínez spent eight years at Arsenal before joining Aston Villa in 2020, where his career has flourished. Since leaving the Gunners, he has earned back-to-back FIFA Best Goalkeeper awards and was instrumental in Argentina’s victories at the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup.
Fueling the rumors, Martínez was visibly emotional during Villa’s final home game of the season, sparking speculation of a farewell. With Aston Villa’s Champions League hopes hanging on their final match against Manchester United, his future remains uncertain.
Raya, despite an outstanding season and being a frontrunner for the Premier League Golden Glove, could be sold for the right offer, especially with Real and Atlético seeking long-term replacements for their veteran keepers. Meanwhile, Martínez continues to draw interest not only from European clubs but also from Saudi Pro League teams.
A return to the Emirates would offer Martínez a second chapter with the Gunners—this time as a proven international star ready to anchor Arsenal’s ambitions at the highest level.
