Three Dhaka University students ended their four-day hunger strike on Saturday night after Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan assured them that the DUCSU Election Commission would be formed by June 2 and progress would be made in the investigation into student Shammo’s murder.
The students—Mohammad Bin Yamin Molla, President of the Bangladesh Student Rights Council; Mohammad Mahtab Islam, Joint Convener of its DU unit; and Jamaluddin Muhammad Khalid, Convener of the Independent Bangladesh Student Union—had been on a hunger strike since May 21 in front of the VC’s residence.
During a meeting, the VC committed to addressing the students’ three key demands: forming the DUCSU Election Commission, ensuring justice in the Shammo case, and establishing a safe, outsider-free campus environment. The strike ended when the students were offered water by VC Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Dr. Mamun Ahmed.
The VC reaffirmed the university’s commitment to its democratic values, stating that DUCSU elections are a constitutional tradition and the administration is dedicated to fulfilling its promises. The students, while calling off their protest, warned they would resume their movement if the commitments are not honored.
