Leaders of the Socialist Students’ Front-Marxist (SSF), Dhaka University unit, have called for immediate government intervention to resolve severe accommodation shortages affecting newly admitted students as classes are set to begin on July 2.
In a joint statement, SSF DU leaders Muzammel Haque and Akash Ali criticised the university administration for failing to ensure adequate housing for first-year students in the 2024–25 academic session. They highlighted that arranging off-campus housing in Dhaka is unaffordable for most newcomers, with female students facing particular hardship.
The crisis, they said, stems from poor coordination between the university administration, dean’s offices, departmental offices, and hall offices, leaving many students without confirmed accommodation even as they arrive in Dhaka.
The SSF leaders proposed both immediate and long-term solutions, including urgent construction of new dormitories and temporary housing stipends for students without seat allocations. They warned against any return to the controversial ‘Ganoroom’ system of forced mass dormitory living and political coercion under the banned Chhatra League.
Referencing the 2024 mass uprising that reshaped campus politics, the leaders said, “No student from this first post-uprising batch wants a return to the dark era of Ganorooms and Guest Rooms.”
DU SSF urged students to unite against any revival of oppressive accommodation practices and demanded strict administrative oversight to ensure fair and transparent seat allocations for all students.
