The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has called for immediate accommodation guarantees for all first-year students, following the completion of departmental and hall allocations for the 2024-25 academic year.
JCD leaders, President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, urged the university administration to provide housing stipends for students denied residential places and to prevent a return to oppressive accommodation practices seen during previous governments.
They expressed concerns over the potential revival of forced mass dormitory arrangements and coercive political activities that historically targeted new students, stating, “No student from this first post-uprising batch wants to see revival of the dark era.”
The organisation emphasised its commitment to merit-based campus politics and rejected non-academic political coercion, warning that inadequate housing solutions could recreate exploitative conditions where students faced substandard living arrangements and political pressure.
Chhatra Dal leaders pledged ‘high vigilance’ to ensure oppressive practices do not resurface and demanded punitive action against those previously involved in student harassment. The statement positioned their demands within the broader goal of building a “socially just, exploitation-free society” through an inclusive and supportive education system.
DU JCD Office Secretary Mollik Wasi Uddin Tami issued a formal statement demanding swift administrative action to resolve the housing shortage affecting the university’s newest cohort of students.
