DNCC Accuses Nurul Haque Nur of Inciting Unrest Over Contract Dispute; Gono Odhikar Fires Back with Corruption Allegations

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has accused Gono Odhikar Parishad President and former DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur of inciting unrest after his favored contractor was not awarded a public works contract. DNCC claims Nur pressured Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman on May 18 to award the contract, allegedly threatening to lock the DNCC office when denied. When the contract was ultimately not granted, Nur and his supporters reportedly staged a disruptive protest on May 20 outside DNCC’s Gulshan-2 headquarters.

In response, Gono Odhikar Parishad called the accusations politically motivated and false. Nur publicly accused DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz of corruption and alleged links to Hizb ut Tahrir, referencing prior claims that Ejaz had faced militancy-related charges in 2015. The group issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Ejaz’s removal and arrest, warning of further protests if no action is taken. They also alleged irregularities in DNCC’s tender process, including manipulation of the Gabtoli livestock market contract.

Gono Odhikar Parishad has scheduled a press conference on May 22 to address the matter and present evidence. The ongoing dispute highlights escalating tensions over public accountability, transparency, and political influence in Dhaka’s municipal governance.
