DMP Introduces Smart Pedestrian Traffic Signals to Modernize Dhaka’s Road Safety

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched new initiatives to improve the city’s traffic system through digital modernization, aiming to enhance road safety and quality of life for residents. In a public notice issued Thursday (May 15), DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali announced the installation of smart pedestrian traffic signal lights at three key locations: in front of the National Heart Foundation, Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Road (near the old Ramna Police Station), and in front of BRAC University in Badda. Additional signal lights will be added at various zebra crossings across the city in phases.

These systems include push-button-activated pedestrian signals that provide a green crossing light and simultaneously stop vehicle traffic with a red light. Legal action will be taken against both drivers who ignore red lights and pedestrians who cross without waiting for the green signal. The initiative reflects DMP’s commitment to digital traffic control and improved pedestrian safety in Dhaka.
