Dhaka University Students Sing National Anthem in Protest Against Alleged Disrespect

In a peaceful demonstration Monday evening, students of Dhaka University gathered at the Raju Memorial Sculpture to protest what they described as a recent act of disrespect toward the national anthem. As a symbolic response, they stood united and sang the national anthem in unison around 7:30 PM.

The protest was prompted by an incident that allegedly occurred during a political demonstration in Shahbagh on May 10, where participants reportedly interrupted the national anthem by shouting slogans such as “fake, fake”—a move the students claim insulted national symbols and the spirit of Bangladesh.

Students from various residential halls marched to the site chanting, “Who are you? Who am I? We are Bangladeshis,” asserting their unity and national pride.

Addressing the media, several students emphasized that they would not accept any form of disrespect toward the national flag or anthem. “If someone wants to engage in politics in this country, they must first show respect to the ideals of Bangladesh,” one protester stated.

The protest followed viral footage on social media that appeared to show attempts to disrupt the anthem during a political blockade demanding the banning of the Awami League and other political reforms.

The students concluded their demonstration with a pledge to remain alert and vocal in defense of the country’s core values and symbols.
