Shahriar Alam Samyo, a 25-year-old Dhaka University student and Literary Secretary of the A.F. Rahman Hall unit, was brutally killed late Tuesday night near Ramna Kali Mandir, close to the campus. The incident reportedly followed an argument stemming from a motorcycle collision near Suhrawardy Udyan’s open stage, escalating into a deadly attack where Samyo was fatally stabbed in the thigh with a sharp weapon.
Samyo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research from the 2018-19 session, was declared dead shortly after being rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with multiple injuries. Hours earlier, he had been seen enjoying a concert at Suhrawardy Udyan with friends, posting a video on Facebook.
Police have arrested one suspect and are actively pursuing others. A forensic team has collected evidence, but no motive has been confirmed. The killing has reignited serious concerns over campus and public space safety, particularly in Suhrawardy Udyan, which has a history of violent incidents.
Students and political groups, including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), have demanded a swift and transparent investigation. University representatives have also urged increased nighttime security and police patrols around the campus.
Samyo, originally from Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj, was described as a dedicated and promising figure in student politics. His murder adds to the growing list of violent incidents in Suhrawardy Udyan, raising critical questions about law enforcement and public safety enforcement in the area.
