Cyclone ‘Shakti’ has caused a sharp rise in water levels in the Meghna and Tetulia rivers, submerging low-lying areas of Char Fasson Upazila under 4–5 feet of water. Remote island villages such as Dhal Char, Char Motahar, Char Mainka, Kalmi, and Char Kukri Mukri, along with nearly 50 islets, are now underwater, leaving thousands stranded. Continuous heavy rain and tidal surges have triggered widespread waterlogging and river erosion, damaging around 100 homes and disrupting power and communication services since May 27.
A breach in the embankment at Hazariganj Union has intensified panic, prompting emergency evacuations by local volunteers. Over 6 kilometers of embankments are at high risk, while launch services across seven routes remain suspended. Fish traders and villagers have begun relocating amid worsening conditions. In the char regions—many lacking permanent embankments or cyclone shelters—residents face extreme danger.
Authorities have activated 256 cyclone shelters and deployed 300 volunteers, with local officials, including the UNO and community leaders, coordinating emergency response efforts on the ground.
