Five formal charges have been filed with the International Crimes Tribunal against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of ordering crimes against humanity during the July-August 2024 protests, known as the “Monsoon Revolution.” The 135-page charge sheet, backed by 8,747 pages of supporting documents, video and audio evidence, and testimony from 81 witnesses, was officially submitted to the tribunal on Sunday and broadcast live on BTV.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun are also named as co-accused. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam stated the charges include ordering, inciting, and facilitating the mass killing of over 1,400 protesters. He emphasized that the trial is not an act of revenge but a commitment to ensuring future accountability and justice.
The tribunal, originally established under Hasina’s own administration to prosecute 1971 war crimes, now becomes the venue for her own prosecution in one of the country’s most politically charged legal proceedings.
