Court Imposes Travel Ban on Actress Meher Afroz Shaon, 12 Others in Attempted Murder Case Filed by Stepmother

A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on actress and singer Meher Afroz Shaon along with 12 others in connection with a case filed by her stepmother, Nishi Islam, accusing them of attempted murder, assault, and criminal conspiracy.

The order was issued on Thursday, May 22, by Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Chanaullah. Court Bench Assistant Parvez Sumon confirmed the ruling, which follows a petition submitted by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Md. Pintu, seeking to prevent the accused from leaving the country.

The list of those banned includes former Detective Branch chief Harun Or Rashid, former CTTC officer Nazmul Islam, Shaon’s father Engineer Md. Ali, her sister Mahin Afroz Shinjan, and others including police officials. While two of the accused are currently out on bail, the remaining ten are absconding, with arrest warrants issued against them on April 22.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 1.

The case stems from events that began in February 2024, when Nishi Islam alleged that Engineer Md. Ali married her without disclosing his previous marriage or children. After discovering the truth, she claims she was threatened and assaulted by Shaon and other family members. She further alleges that attempts were made to force her signature on blank documents and that she was later physically assaulted at the Detective Branch office, where she was falsely implicated in a drug trafficking case.

The court’s decision to restrict the accused from leaving the country comes amid ongoing legal proceedings and serious allegations of abuse of power, deception, and physical violence.
