The government has formed a committee to evaluate and restructure the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced on Monday (May 12). The statement came following a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Council at the Secretariat.
Chowdhury stated that the majority of the meeting focused on the future of RAB, including whether the force will retain its current name, uniform, or structure. “A committee has been formed to determine how RAB will be reorganized,” he said. “It will explore all aspects of its identity and operations.” The advisory body will be led by Lieutenant General (Retd.) Abdul Hafiz, Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, with 5 to 6 initial members, including several service chiefs. Additional members may be added as needed.
Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Abdul Hafiz currently assists the Chief Adviser on matters of defense and national integration development. The formation of this committee signals a significant policy review of one of the country’s most controversial and high-profile security forces.
