Civil Society and Media Urged to Play Stronger Role in Tackling Chittagong Waterlogging

A seminar titled “Role of Civil Society and Media in Reducing Waterlogging in Chittagong City” was held on Saturday at the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) conference room, organized by the Bangladesh Public Relations Association (BPRA) Chattogram chapter.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, attending as chief guest, emphasized the need for transparency and media involvement in identifying and resolving the city’s waterlogging issues. He criticized the disparity in budget allocation between Dhaka and Chittagong, despite the port city’s economic contributions, and stated that 50–60% of the waterlogging could be resolved with proper equipment and management.

The keynote was presented by Bhuiyan Nazrul, bureau chief of The Daily Desh Rupantor. Seminar participants stressed the importance of stopping hill cutting, reclaiming illegally occupied land, and modernizing waste management. They also suggested converting garbage into resources and empowering youth through organized community efforts.

Prominent figures including academics, city officials, journalists, and urban planners joined the discussion, all calling for coordinated action to address Chittagong’s chronic waterlogging problems.
