Civil Service Cadres Launch Two-Day Strike Over Discrimination and Reform Demands

Officials from 25 civil service cadres across Bangladesh will observe a two-day pen-down strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, protesting alleged discrimination and demanding administrative reforms. The strike, set for 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM each day, excludes emergency services such as hospital care.

Organized by the Inter-Cadre Disparity Elimination Council, the protest calls for an end to inter-cadre bias, fair treatment in disciplinary actions, leadership appointments based on technical merit, and the cancellation of a proposed 50% quota in the Deputy Secretary pool favoring the administration cadre.

The move follows the suspension of 12 officers for social media activity, while similar actions reportedly went unpunished among administration cadre officials. Protesters also rejected recent Public Administration Reform Commission proposals made without consultation.

This is the latest in a series of coordinated actions, including a full-day strike in March and prior demonstrations in December 2024.
