U.S. singer Chris Brown has been remanded in custody following a court appearance in Manchester, England, in connection with an alleged nightclub assault.
The 36-year-old artist was arrested early Thursday morning at The Lowry Hotel and charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) relating to an incident that reportedly took place at Tape nightclub in London on 19 February 2023.
During a brief hearing at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Brown confirmed his name, date of birth, and address as The Lowry Hotel. District Judge Joanne Hirst determined that the GBH charge was too serious for the magistrates’ court and referred the case to Southwark Crown Court in London, setting a new court date for 13 June.
Prosecutor Hannah Nicholls alleged that Brown attacked music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle, striking him multiple times before proceeding to punch and kick him with the assistance of another individual.
Despite arguments from Brown’s legal team that he posed no flight risk and would adhere to bail conditions, the judge denied bail and ordered that he remain in custody until his next court appearance.
Brown had flown into Manchester ahead of his scheduled Breezy Ball XX tour across Europe, set to begin on 8 June in Amsterdam, with further stops in Germany, France, and the U.K. No official statement has yet been released regarding the status of the tour.
