Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, is scheduled to visit the United Kingdom from June 9 to 13, according to diplomatic sources. During the trip, he is expected to hold meetings with British King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, although the final itinerary is still being confirmed, a Foreign Ministry official said.
The visit will focus on key bilateral issues, including money laundering, trade and investment, development cooperation, the Rohingya refugee crisis, and regional stability in South Asia.
Top representatives from Bangladesh Bank and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will accompany Dr. Yunus to engage in discussions about the repatriation of laundered money, as the UK remains a significant destination for illicit financial outflows from Bangladesh.
A diplomat in Dhaka described the UK trip as a strategic priority, especially following Dr. Yunus’s recent visit to China. The interim government has made the recovery of funds illegally transferred abroad in recent years a central objective.
In addition, the delegation will seek renewed UK support for the Rohingya humanitarian response, as global aid—particularly from USAID—has decreased. Bangladesh hopes to secure fresh commitments from the UK to help sustain services for the displaced population.
The visit will also aim to strengthen ties with the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK, which now exceeds 600,000 people. Dr. Yunus plans to engage the expatriate community to explore new trade and investment partnerships, reinforcing the strong historical and economic connections between the two nations.
