Chief Adviser Sets December–June Election Window, Vows to Step Down by June Deadline

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has confirmed to Japan that Bangladesh’s next national election will be held between December 2025 and June 2026, with a firm commitment to step down by the end of June. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared the update on Wednesday during a media briefing in Tokyo, following Prof Yunus’s meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso.

Prof Yunus emphasized that he will not remain in power beyond June and will announce a specific election date once preparations are complete. The election timeframe serves as a political roadmap, reflecting the interim government’s commitment to democratic transition.

The press secretary also noted that the government is advancing key reforms across the economic, administrative, and legal sectors, while the Election Commission’s work is ongoing. Additionally, the National Consensus Commission, led by Prof Ali Riaz, will begin its second round of political dialogue in early June to foster agreement among parties on necessary reforms.

Prof Yunus is driving forward with a threefold agenda: reform, justice, and free elections, aiming to ensure a stable and credible electoral process.
