Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has embarked on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom from June 10 to 13, where he is scheduled to meet King Charles III, receive the prestigious King Charles III Harmony Award, and hold key diplomatic meetings with UK leaders.
During the visit, Yunus will also engage in discussions at Chatham House on Bangladesh’s political landscape and attend a special dinner celebrating the 35th anniversary of The King’s Foundation. He is expected to meet Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy to strengthen bilateral ties and explore collaboration in areas such as climate change, trade, and investment.
However, the political spotlight is fixed on the possibility of a meeting between Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. With ongoing disagreements between the ruling government and the BNP over the electoral roadmap, rumors of a meeting have stirred significant attention.
At a June 4 press briefing, Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique said he had no information confirming such a meeting. However, a senior Foreign Ministry official stated that the ministry would consider arranging one if formally requested.
In addition to high-level diplomatic engagements, Yunus’s visit also aims to bolster international support for Bangladesh’s democratic process and address issues like money laundering, which may be discussed with UK authorities.
While no confirmation has been made about a Yunus-Tarique meeting, officials suggest it remains diplomatically possible if both parties express interest.
