Chad has suspended the issuance of visas to U.S. citizens in direct response to a new executive order by President Donald Trump that bans entry from 12 countries, including Chad. Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno announced the retaliatory move on June 5, declaring, “Chad has self-respect and pride,” in a statement posted on Facebook.
Trump’s travel ban, which takes effect next Monday, targets countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, and Somalia, citing national security concerns following a recent petrol bomb attack at a Jewish rally in Colorado. Though the suspect was Egyptian—and Egypt is not on the banned list—the incident was used to justify the sweeping measure.
In addition to the full ban on 12 countries, a partial travel restriction has been imposed on citizens from seven others, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Turkmenistan. Chad’s swift countermeasure signals growing diplomatic friction as countries push back against U.S. immigration policies.
