Cattle Market at School Sparks Tension in Chandina; Jubo Dal Leader Apologizes After Insulting Magistrate

In Chandina Upazila of Comilla, classes at Dollai Nawabpur Government Primary School were disrupted after a cattle market was set up on school grounds by a local lessee. The unauthorized use of the field prompted an operation led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Muhammad Faisal Al Noor, during which tensions flared between officials and market organizers.

Md. Akhtaruzzaman, president of the local Union Jubo Dal and manager of the cattle market, was accused of inciting a crowd and verbally insulting the magistrate, calling him a “fascist” and “an Awami League agent.” Eyewitnesses reported chants of “hold on, hold on” as the magistrate took refuge at the nearby Union Land Office.

The situation deescalated only after a team from the army arrived around 7:30 PM. In their presence, Akhtaruzzaman admitted fault and formally apologized by signing a bond. He later claimed the market was leased in the name of the union BNP president and that the confrontation escalated after a disagreement with the magistrate.

Chandina Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Ashraful Haque confirmed that a mobile court was deployed to enforce the removal of the market and warned of further action if the school grounds are used again for trading. The incident highlights growing concerns over misuse of public spaces and political interference in administrative affairs.
