SM Shariful Alam, elder brother of slain Dhaka University (DU) student leader Shahriar Alam Shammo, has urged authorities to ensure a swift, impartial trial and warned against using his brother’s death for political gain.
Speaking at a protest rally on Sunday, organized by students of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at DU, Shariful stated that justice must be served without delay or manipulation, and that only the true perpetrators should be held accountable.
The rally began at the IER building and moved to the Raju Memorial Sculpture, later reaching Shahbagh Police Station, where students demanded updates on the investigation. Protesters chanted slogans such as “We want justice” and “My brother is in the grave, why are the killers free?”
DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed joined the demonstration, assuring students that the administration is actively pursuing justice and has scheduled a meeting with the Home Affairs Adviser to expedite the investigation.
A delegation of teachers and students later met with officials at Shahbagh Police Station to review progress in the case. The demonstration follows the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued on Friday, during which earlier protests had also surrounded the police station.
Shariful expressed gratitude to the DU administration but called on all parties to avoid politicizing his brother’s death, emphasizing the need for accountability and fairness in the ongoing investigation.
