A faction of BNP leaders and activists staged a protest on Tuesday from morning until noon in front of the district BNP office at Courtpara, Kushtia, demanding the cancellation of the recent municipal BNP election results due to alleged rigging. During the demonstration, some protesters wrapped themselves in shrouds and lay down on the street, chanting slogans for over two hours and also calling for the dissolution of the current district BNP convening committee.
The protest was led by former joint general secretary of Kushtia district BNP, Kajal Majmadar, who announced the program at a press conference on Monday. She warned that if their demands were not met within 24 hours, they would enforce stricter programs like hartal and blockade.
The dispute arose following last Friday’s election for Kushtia Municipality BNP president and general secretary posts, which Kajal Majmadar lost. She alleged that the election was rigged. However, District BNP Member Secretary Zakir Hossain Sarkar rejected her claims, stating that votes were even recounted upon her request, and accused her of trying to create chaos within the party.
