Bangladesh to Receive $1.3 Billion from IMF by June, Alongside $2 Billion in Budget Support from Development Partners

The Ministry of Finance has announced it expects to receive $1.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—covering the fourth and fifth tranches—by June 2025, following the successful completion of the IMF’s fourth review mission.

In a press release issued on Wednesday (May 14), the ministry confirmed that the IMF tranches will be disbursed together, as previously agreed during the third review. This comes after comprehensive discussions on key reforms in revenue management and exchange rate policy, held both in Dhaka and at the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, DC last month.

In addition to the IMF funds, the Finance Ministry also anticipates receiving another $2 billion in budget support from multiple development partners by June. These include the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Japan, and the OPEC Fund for International Development.

According to the ministry, these inflows will strengthen Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves and help stabilize the currency exchange rate. The ministry emphasized that all reforms tied to this assistance are nationally driven, designed by the Bangladesh government in alignment with the country’s economic priorities, while development partners will only provide technical support.

This significant financial backing is expected to bolster macroeconomic stability and support the country’s ongoing economic recovery and reform efforts.
