Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated on Thursday that the government will continue its efforts to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has reportedly been in India since August 5 last year. Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hossain emphasized that the matter would be followed up if necessary, despite nearly a year passing since Bangladesh formally requested her return through a diplomatic note sent to India in December, accompanied by supporting documents.
Addressing other regional matters, Hossain highlighted that unresolved water-sharing agreements, including the long-pending Teesta deal and the soon-to-expire Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, must be settled through bilateral discussions. He also dismissed media interpretations suggesting that a recent meeting between Dhaka, Beijing, and Islamabad was intended as an alternative alliance to SAARC. “The meeting was to discuss areas of cooperation and in no way an alliance,” he clarified, reiterating Bangladesh’s commitment to regional diplomatic processes.
