Bangladesh’s football team has disappointed with its performance on the field in the first edition of the FIFA Asian Cup, with the red-green representatives failing to win a single match in the tournament. Thomas Dooley’s men lost their final match to hosts Indonesia by a huge margin of 9-2 on Thursday, October 1. The defeat was one of the biggest in the country’s football history, and it ended Bangladesh’s campaign on a bitter note. However, the disappointment on the field was soon followed by controversy off it, as videos and pictures of two senior footballers, Saad Uddin and junior Sohel Rana, at a nightclub went viral on social media.
A post was made from the X account of an Indonesian woman named Alana, showing Saad and Sohel Rana with three women. In a video, Saad is also seen dancing to the beat of a song. Netizens and fans did not take the matter well, especially because the videos and pictures went viral right after the team’s humiliating defeat. They criticised the players on social media, questioning their conduct and commitment at a time when the team had just suffered a heavy loss. However, Saad and Sohail have given different information about the incident. Their statement is, “After signing with Mohammedan, we were free. Before the national team camp started, we went to Nepal to travel. Then we met and got acquainted with him at a club. This was not in Jakarta or Indonesia.” They sought to distance the incident from the team’s Asian Cup campaign, claiming it took place during a different period and in a different country.
However, Indonesian woman Alana posted on her handle, “Met the footballers in Bangladesh at their club. They invited me to watch the Bangladesh-Indonesia match. It would have been fun to watch the game and cheer for Bangladesh instead of my national team.” Her post suggested that the meeting took place in Bangladesh and that the players had invited her to watch the match, contradicting the players’ claim that the incident occurred in Nepal. The conflicting accounts have added to the confusion and debate surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, Bangladesh team manager Amirul Islam Babu said that the players were ordered to return to their rooms after dinner following the match against Indonesia. He said, “The players went to sleep after dinner. We can’t stand outside their doors all night.” However, Babu did not rule out the possibility that they went out in violation of the order. He said, “If they did, we have a disciplinary committee. We will take action.” His statement indicated that the team management is aware of the allegations and is prepared to investigate and take disciplinary measures if the players are found to have violated team rules.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with fans and netizens expressing anger and disappointment over the players’ conduct, particularly in the wake of the team’s poor performance in the tournament. The videos and pictures have become a major talking point, and the controversy has added to the pressure on the Bangladesh football team and its management. The players’ explanations and the Indonesian woman’s account differ significantly, and it remains unclear exactly where and when the incident took place. The team manager’s comments suggest that the matter will be looked into, and any violation of team discipline could lead to action by the disciplinary committee. The Bangladesh football team’s campaign in the FIFA Asian Cup was already disappointing, and the off-field controversy has further damaged the team’s image and raised questions about the conduct and accountability of the players.
